ENVY'S POTLUCK
by INVERMON
The right food, the right drinks, the right songs, the right vibes… “Envy’s Potluck” was a huge success.
I have to admit, it was impromptu. I spend most of my days planning the perfect show or the perfect album or the perfect song but for that week, I said “screw it”. I was going to make a flier about an event I’m hosting. The goal was to share my music intimately, with my closest contacts. Once I made the flier, I knew exactly who to send it to.
Then came the fear… Normally, I’m used to Nos and “Maybe next time” but when I started getting “Yes”, the pressure was on.

The food has to be perfect! Not spicy enough? Throw in an extra pepper. The speaker’s not booming enough! How will they know if the mix is good?! Let’s throw in some Afrobeats mix in this playlist. Why’s the spaghetti burning from underneath!?! Oh crap! We forgot to lock the door! Uber’s here!
Ahh… peace. We’re outside now.

Waiting…
Waiting…
I’m beginning to lose hope now.
But then, I faced my greatest villain. It’s not fear, it’s not ill preparation, it goes by a name so ridiculous we don’t even know how bad it gets.

African Time.
Suddenly, everyone’s coming out the woodwork. Everyone that promised to come, they came. Some got a long shift at work but made it here, others came from outside London just to be here.

Either way, I’m eternally grateful. It couldn’t have gone better than I hoped for. That’s the thing with expectations. They’re meant to be subverted or at least, leave you surprised. I think the human experience is more of losing control and still being okay with it.

I had hoped to convert my friends to fans with the album listening bit but, nah. Another day. I’d like to sit with this memory for a while. It’s lovely enough as it is. My first ever hosted event, and it was successful. I think I’m ready for the next one.
